To the Honorable Minister,
In this new era where natural resources becoming increasingly scarce on a global scale its leaves to reason that one or two less diplomatic countries may have their eyes on our fresh water, food, minerals, energy, lumber & natural beauty. Canada really does have allot to lose.
The majority of Canadians today take these things for granted, including our freedom. We do have to be prepared to defend out country from external threats without sacrificing our rights & freedom as they are doing in the USA. I feel like our country is as vulnerable as fish in a barrel when you consider Russia, a powerful military giant whom is not known to be a friendly neighbor.... is so close & already testing our patience in the north. Who knows what kind of a Government will be controlling things south of the border in a few years time.
I overheard you hyping the latest plans to purchase new fighter jets as upgrading our military equipment is a necessary evil in these times. You mentioned that these are the only "next generation" fighter jets available. The reason the new fighter jets are the only "next generation" fighter jets available is because the smart money is being spent by other countries such as China ,Israel ,Russia , Briton & USA on Pilot-less Drones aka U.A.V. Its kind of like bragging that you have the latest & greatest Horse & Buggy.
As impressive as the latest Jet Fighters are I would like to suggest you don't put all the taxpayers eggs in one basket. We have allot of land to cover & we need eyes along our northern borders. Armed U.A.V. drones are our best & efficient option for patrolling our vast areas of uninhabited land while the fighter pilots remains available for combat when needed.
With all due respect I'm sure I don't need to tell you this. Your a young guy, sharp & in touch with whats going on....I assume. Equally impressed with the chicks you manage to score :) I really think the best defence is to invest in the people of Canada, with education in science, physics & tech. We need to develop our own tools for national defence.
We need trained civilians whom are ready to take up arms when called upon. Thats how they role in tougher countries than ours. We cant even legally own firecrackers up here. We cant always be the happy friendly neighbor as were known to be. At some point we will be tested...that is a fact. As a sovern nation we need to be less reliant on our friendly but bankrupt, battle weary southern neighbor to the south. I have a feeling once they finally realize what kind of trouble their country is in, they wont be so friendly anymore....and they have had plenty of time for target practice.
